Questions and Answers for People New to Chamber Music Concerts

Attending a classical music concert for the first time can be an exciting and fun yet unfamiliar experience. Here are some common questions people might have:

What should I wear?

Dress codes can vary, but it's generally safe to wear business casual clothes.

Where are the concerts held and when should I arrive?

All of our concerts are held in Beckwith Hall, located in the Cultural Arts Building on the UNCW campus. Plan to arrive at least 20-30 minutes before the concert begins to find your seat and settle in.

What should I do if I arrive late?

There are ushers at the doors of Beckwith Hall. They will help you find your seat during a short pause between sections and/or at the end of a piece.

When do I clap?

Applause is usually reserved for the end of a piece, not between movements. If in doubt, wait and follow the lead of the regular concertgoers.

Can I use my phone?

No. Recording or taking a video during a performance is not permitted. It's best to turn off or silence your phone and avoid using it during the performance to respect the musicians and other audience members.

What if I need to leave during the performance?

Try to wait until a break between pieces or movements to minimize disruption.

How long will the concert last?

Chamber Music Wilmington Concerts typically last between 1.5 to 2 hours, usually with an intermission.

What should I expect in terms of the music?

Chamber music is a form of classical music composed for a small group of instruments. Traditionally, this group could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. It includes any art music performed by a small number of musicians, with one performer assigned to each part. Unlike orchestral music, which involves multiple performers on each string part, chamber music typically doesn’t include solo instrument performances. Given the intimate nature of chamber music, especially in a great acoustical setting like Beckwith Hall, one might describe it as “the music of friends.”

Are there any rules about seating?

Generally, you should sit in your assigned seat as indicated on your ticket and avoid moving around or talking once the performance has started.

Can I bring food or drinks?

Food and drinks are not allowed in the concert hall.

How can I learn more about the music being played?

All of our concert programs include notes about the pieces and composers. In addition, the musicians will speak about the individual pieces they will play. Another idea might be that you can search on YouTube or Spotify for online recordings and videos of the musicians.

Are there any accessibility services provided?

Yes.  Please let an usher know that you need an accessible seat or shown to an area that can accommodate your wheelchair.
